Dr. Michael Youssef is the founder and president of Leading the Way, an international ministry that teaches the Bible through radio, the internet, and on television. Dr. Youssef’s video and radio broadcasts are aired in twenty languages in more than two hundred countries. God has blessed Leading the Way by giving the ministry an opportunity to teach the gospel to millions, and it is clear that God’s hand led Michael to the ministry he has today.
When Michael was still in his mother’s womb, her doctors told her that she might die if she went ahead with the birth. Based on the doctor’s recommendation, they planned for an operation to terminate the pregnancy. Their pastor visited them and told them that God wanted this child to live. His evangelical parents listened to their pastor and his mother carried him, in spite of the danger it could pose to her life. Michael was born in Egypt in 1948. When he was twenty-one years old he lived for a short time in Lebanon before traveling to Australia. It was there that he received a bachelor’s degree in theology from Moore Theological Seminary and met his wife Elizabeth at the Kinsgrove Anglican Church. He was ordained as a minister after his third year at Moore.
In 1977, the young couple moved to America. Michael received a Master’s degree in theology from Fuller seminary in California and a Ph.D. from Emory in Atlanta. After receiving his doctorate, the couple stayed in Atlanta and started The Church of the Apostles. Shortly after the doors opened, Michael began a little radio broadcast of sixty to ninety second spots on local stations. For the next ten years the church and the broadcast both grew, but it was in the year 2000 that everything really took off.
A man named Ben Haden had a radio and television contract for his ministry, called Changed Lives. He unexpectedly contacted Michael one day to tell him that God had told him to give these contracts to Michael.
Since then, Dr. Youssef’s ministry has grown to reach millions. Between the radio show and video sermons, Leading the Way is aired 3,800 times each week, including Sundays on TBN.
