Charles Stanley is the senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta and the president of In Touch Ministries. Paul Crouch, founder of TBN, wanted Dr. Stanley’s messages from his church to air on the family of networks, and he can be seen on TBN, TBN-Enlace, and The Church Channel. Dr. Stanley has had a long career teaching and preaching the Word of God, not only in his church but on televised broadcasts. He and Paul Crouch share the distinction as forerunners of using the media of television to teach the Bible.
Dr. Stanley began his pastoring ministry in 1971 at FBC Atlanta. By 1978, a local thirty minute broadcast, called The Chapel Hour, contacted Dr. Stanley and asked him to become a part of this venture. One week the audience to his teaching was 16,000 people, The next week his voice was heard nationwide because of satellite distribution to local cable television systems. That new technology allowed In Touch to become a household name, reaching more than a million households in the 1980’s.
Today his reach has grown even more. The In Touch radio program is broadcast in more than fifty languages and it has received the Radio Program of the Year award from the National Religious Broadcaster’s association. The televised broadcast is also multinational and has received the Television Producer of the Year award. For years, In Touch Magazine has published articles about God, faith, family, and spiritual life, and produced a separate, weekly, devotional guide for reading through the Bible.
Dr. Stanley received his theological education at Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth and Luther Rice Seminary in Georgia. He has served as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention twice and has been elected to the National Religious Broadcaster’s board of directors. He very strongly believes that the Bible is the inerrant word of God and his ministries mission statement “is to lead people worldwide into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to strengthen the local church.”
