– The Great Temple, the holy place held in highest reverence among the Jewish people. This is a truly breathtaking representation of the temple that once stood on hallowed Mount Moriah in First Century Jerusalem.

– Calvary’s Garden Tomb, a convincing representation of the sacred place where Jesus was laid after His crucifixion — and from which He was gloriously resurrected after three days.

One of the favorite displays of guests at the Holy Land Experience is the world-renowned Scriptorium. A combination museum, library, and research center, the Scriptorium holds a collection of priceless manuscripts, scrolls, biblical antiquities, and artifacts that draws many students and scholars. The enlightening presentations that accompany the exhibits offer visitors a close-up view of biblical and church history.

Two popular Smile of a Child shows have been nominated for this year’s Crown honors: iShine KNECT in the categories for Best Youth Film, Best Comedy, Best Television Format, and Best Series; and Mary Rice Hopkins & Puppets with a Heart in the categories for Best Series and Best Children’s Film. “Having our programs highlighted in the Crown Award venue is a special honor,” said Brenda Rossman, Smile of a Child’s program director. “It re-enforces our commitment to create shows that give children a foundation for a life of faith in God.”

On May 28, 2013, Trinity Broadcasting Network, the world’s largest religious broadcaster and America’s most-watched faith channel, celebrates its 40th anniversary. On the occasion, TBN founder and President, Dr. Paul Crouch, offered the following reflection on the spiritual state of the world forty years ago and today.

When Trinity Broadcasting Network first signed on the air May 28, 1973, on a tiny, barely functioning low-power station we had recently acquired in Southern California, my wife, Jan, and I had no idea how to “do” Christian television. There were no models, no guide books, no marketing experts to tell us what viewers wanted or would watch. In fact, we weren’t even sure anyone would tune in! All we knew was that God had called us to use the medium of television to be a part of fulfilling His great commission, to “go into all the world and preach the Gospel.” So we began, with one borrowed camera, a shower curtain for a backdrop, two folding chairs — and hearts full of faith that God would bless our efforts.

To our surprise and great joy, people did tune in! At first, just local Christians, but before long others began calling in — people in motel rooms, bars, and homes across the area that needed hope, healing, and salvation. By the end of that year 3,000 people had come to Christ as the result of our little TV ministry, and by 1975 18,000 souls had come into God’s Kingdom! 

TBN certainly wasn’t unique at the time. God was pouring out His Spirit on countless individuals, churches, and ministries. Many answered the call to win the lost, disciple new believers, and equip those new converts for the work of the Gospel and this last great Kingdom harvest. Like many ministries, TBN faced its share of opposition, obstacles, hardships, and fiery attacks from the enemy. More than once we were tempted to give up because we felt that what God had called us to do was just too difficult.

But God was faithful! Even in our weakness and temptations to quit, we kept on in faith pouring our time, resources, and prayer into the one local TV station He had given us. By 1983 that one station had become six located in strategic areas across the nation. In another ten years those half dozen stations grew to over 300 stations and affiliates — each one broadcasting the Good News 24/7! In the meantime, God was busy around the world opening up areas that had been closed and even antagonistic to the Gospel. We literally stood and watched God miraculously open awesome doors to foreign lands.

Here is one example: In the former Soviet Union, where Christianity had been outlawed for more than 70 years, TBN was welcomed to open first one, then another Christian TV station. Today six unique TBN affiliate networks in Russia broadcast life-changing programming around the world. And last year TBN Russia even launched a special network, the Shalom Channel, in the heart of Israel, broadcasting the Gospel to millions of Russian Jews who have returned to their homeland.

In a similar way, as we prayed and looked for a way to reach Muslim countries, God miraculously opened doors. TBN helped establish two global networks, one broadcasting in the Arabic language and one in the Farsi language. These networks now reach millions of Arab and Iranian Muslims in the Middle East and around the world. 

Today, 40 years after its launch with that one small station, TBN has grown, through simple obedience to God’s voice and by His amazing power, to 24 distinct networks on every inhabited continent, plus nearly 18,000 television and cable affiliates worldwide, fed by over 80 international satellite channels. This is not to mention its global reach via the Internet and TBN Mobile. Most importantly, to date more than 36 million men, women, and children that we know of (only God knows how many more) have come to faith in Christ because of TBN’s worldwide evangelical outreach.

Yes, the world we live in today is far different than it was in 1973. Unrest is heating up in nearly every corner of the earth as never before. Opposition to the Gospel seems to be growing every day. Christian values are being done away with, cultural norms turned upside down, and lifestyles that used to be considered shameful are being celebrated. Shockingly, in some pockets of our beloved America, prayer, Scripture, and sharing one’s faith have been all but outlawed, and in many countries believers are being imprisoned and even killed for their faith in Christ. Sadly, this deteriorating state of the world has caused many Christians to shrink back in fear, and to grow increasingly passive and pessimistic.

But now is not the time to be silenced! What the apostle Paul declared to the early church still holds today: “behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). Just as Joshua encouraged the children of Israel to take the Promised Land and to be “strong and of good courage,” let us take courage — God is on our side. Even as darkness increases across the earth, He is raising up people to carry the message of salvation throughout the nations of the world. The earth is filled with people who need to know Jesus, and God is urgently calling His church to be part of this mighty end-time harvest of souls through prayer, partnering with good ministries, and by reaching out to our families, friends, neighbors, and beyond.

The only qualification you need to be a soul winner for Christ is availability. When God called Jan and me to launch TBN, He didn’t do so because we were the most talented and qualified. I often think of 1 Corinthians 1:27, “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” There were many others with far more skill and resources than we had. He called us because we were willing to be used, regardless of the personal cost and sacrifice. And we had the simple faith to believe that God would lead us every step of the way and empower us to do the work.

Jesus declared that this life-giving message of the Gospel will be preached “in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). Friend, the end has not come yet. There is still time for you to become a part of God’s Kingdom work, to go beyond the “good enough” — the normal and mundane — and say “yes” to His high calling. It will cost you all you have. But it will be worth the price!

“On May 28, 1973, as TBN took to the air on one small low power station in Orange County, California, we weren’t even sure anyone would tune in to watch us,” recalled TBN’s founder and President Dr. Paul Crouch. “But they did, and today untold millions around the world are being impacted everyday by TBN’s life-changing programming on 24 global Christian networks.”

League of Grateful Sons. Among the hundreds of thousands of soldiers, sailors, and airmen who returned home after World War II was a remarkable collection of men who made it their life mission to speak God’s providence and the meaning of manhood to the boys who would follow in their steps. Through wartime letters and present-day pilgrimages to the bloody battlefields of their youth, these warriors have spoken, and their thankful children — the League of Grateful Sons — rise to honor their legacy. Medal of Honor: Living Histories. In this impacting documentary, eight recipients of America’s highest military honor recount the heroic actions that prompted them to receive the Medal, and talk about the feelings they have for their country and for the soldiers who fought along side them. The Four Chaplains. An inspiring and true World War II story that recounts how four Army chaplains joined together in selfless heroism to save the men under their spiritual care from the icy North Atlantic after their ship was destroyed by a Nazi U-boat. It was 1988 and the late Jonas Gonzalez Sr., Latin America’s Christian television trailblazer, was setting up his first small station in the corner of a spaghetti factory in San Jose, Costa Rica. But he had hit some major obstacles. “The truth is that we were about to lose our frequency before we even got on the air,” recalled Jonas Gonzalez Jr., who now directs Enlace’s global broadcast ministry. “My father had plenty of vision and direction from God, but we lacked the finances and much of the know-how to get the station on the air. That is when my father called Paul Crouch.”

Dr. Crouch, who also had a burden to reach Spanish-speaking people with Christian programming, responded by shipping a small ten-watt transmitter to Mr. Gonzalez that enabled the station to get on the air, following up later with a larger transmitter that provided a more powerful signal. “That first transmitter was so small I could hold it in one hand,” recalled Dr. Crouch, “and it only covered about four city blocks. But sowing that tiny seed helped Jonas save the station and get on the air. The rest, as they say, is history.”

Today Enlace and its EJTV youth network are the most viewed Latino inspirational networks, reaching across the earth on a total of fifteen satellites. Cesar Español, Enlace’s director of U.S. operations, said that since launching in the U.S. around ten years ago, Enlace has exploded in popularity throughout the nation’s Hispanic community. “Our research shows that many of America’s 52 million Latinos are actively reaching out for greater spiritual reality in their lives and families,” said Español. “And each day more of them are tuning in to the life-changing message they find on Enlace and EJTV.”

Español noted that over the past two years Enlace has logged an amazing 1.1 million fans on its Enlace Facebook page, and EJTV is close behind with over 825,000 likes on the EJTV Facebook page.

Bing Crosby, arguably the most popular actor and singer of the era, garnered a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Father Chuck O’Malley, a young and unconventional Catholic priest sent by the bishop to turn around the failing St. Dominic’s church in New York City. But to succeed he must win over the church’s senior priest, the staid and traditional Father Fitzgibbon, played by veteran Irish actor Barry Fitzgerald. Amazingly, Fitzgerald was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, and won the Academy Award in the latter category.

Reba Toney, TBN’s director of Social Media, said that participating in the contest is easy. “First of all you have to become a TBN Facebook friend, which gives you access to all the daily news, updates, and information on TBN’s great programming,” she explained. “Then everyday through June 1 we are posting a photo from TBN’s upcoming 40th anniversary book, with a well-known personality, location, or iconic emblem connected with TBN blurred out of the picture. Everyone who guesses the blurred out piece of the photo correctly is entered into a daily and weekly prize drawing — along with a final grand prize drawing at the end of the contest.”

Ms. Toney said that prizes for the contest include exclusive jewelry, art, commemorative gift sets, tickets to TBN’s Holy Land Experience in Orlando, Florida — and even an Apple iPad. “Our goal is to make sure our viewers around the nation are aware of TBN’s incredible Facebook experience, and to alert them to our upcoming 40th anniversary commemorative book.”

That book, entitled The Call: Forty Years of God’s Miracles, has been nearly a year in the making. Scheduled for release in May, The Call includes over a thousand vintage and full-color photos, along with a fascinating narrative that offer an up-close and personal look at the miraculous development of TBN from one small, struggling station in Southern California to a 24-member family of global Christian networks broadcasting life-changing programming around the clock to every inhabited continent.

“The Call has been a special labor of love for me personally,” said TBN Vice President Matthew Crouch, whose parents, Paul and Jan Crouch, launched the network in 1973 and have been its guiding force for the past 40 years. “I am excited to share it with our many friends and partners, as we celebrate TBN’s storied past and look to a future of continued fruitfulness in God’s kingdom.”
